CHAPTER TWELVE

WREN woke up and Reilly wasn’t in bed.

She called for him, thinking he was in the bathroom, and there was no response. She turned on the light next to the bed, and there was a note.

Wren, I thought of something about the case, and I ran to the office to check into it. Be back soon. Cai.

She turned the note over in her hands.

That was odd, him leaving to do work when Timmy was home? He was usually really sensitive about that, saying that Timmy was his kid, his responsibility, and he wouldn’t typically go somewhere and leave her alone with him.

Of course, she guessed they’d both been asleep, her and Timmy.

She found her phone and sent him a text. What are you checking into?

The phone registered that the text had been delivered.

Then a moment later, read.

She waited for him to respond.

He didn’t.

Something surged in her. If things had been different, she might not have felt this as a warning sign, but things between them lately weren’t great. He didn’t trust her with information. She suspected him of murder. She called him.

At first she thought he wasn’t going to pick up. It rang and rang.

But then, he did. “Baby.”

“Why did you go to the office?”

“Uh, I’m working a theory about a police officer killing Hawk. There’s a reason McNamara’s so convinced it’s me, so I’m betting the bullet would match a Glock.”

“Oh,” she said. “Yeah, I guess so.”

“Right, so I thought maybe if I could get a list of people working for the CFPD, we might get an idea of someone who would have it in for Hawk, that’s all.”

“And you need to go to the office? Can’t you just log on to the database on our computers at home?”

A long pause. “Okay, uh, wow. You’re the one with pregnancy brain. What’s my excuse? I’m an idiot. Anyway, I’m coming home. I’ll be there soon.”

She furrowed her brow, feeling sick inside for some reason. Did that even make sense? Could he really make that mistake?

“Wren?” he said.

“Okay, see you soon,” she said. “I love you.”

“Yeah, love you too.”

Had he said that too fast somehow?

She hung up.

The baby decided to move around now, thrusting out against the walls of her belly.

She rubbed her belly reassuringly. “It’s okay, sweetpea. Shh, there, baby girl.” Her eyes stung. “Oh, you need a name, little one. You need a name.”

She got out of bed and waited at the door. Soon enough, he was home. She got up to meet him.

He pulled her into his arms and buried his face in her hair.

She fought free of him. “Cai?”

“Uh…” He tilted his head to one side. “Since you’re awake, would you be at all interested in… uh…”

“What? Would I be interested in what?”

“Like, can I, uh, fuck you?” He raised his eyebrows.

She drew back. “What? What at the office made you all horny?”

“I’m taking a shower.” He gave her a kiss on the forehead.

“Are you showering so that you can… can…?” She folded her arms over her chest.
